We’ve reached the point where the new coronavirus is more than just a news story – it’s impacting all of us in some way. The social distancing and shelter-in-place restrictions, which are necessary for containing the virus and keeping people safe, are unfortunately having serious affects on local businesses. Many stores have been forced to close, while other brands have already seen steep declines in consumer spending. With limited resources and a tighter cash flow, the small businesses in your community are the ones who will struggle most to survive. Thankfully, there are ways that we as consumers can help.

Note: For some families, we understand it may not be feasible to help local businesses right now due to their own circumstances. However, if you are able and want to support your local economy without risking your health, read on for ways you can help.

Retail Industry

Retail stores are among the businesses hit hardest by coronavirus restrictions, as many have had to close their doors for the weeks and even months ahead. To support your favorite local shops, search for their businesses online to see if they now have an online store you can purchase from. You might also consider simply buying a gift card that you can use to buy your favorite products once the physical stores reopen. If your favorite shop offers neither, try sending them a DM or email to ask if you can still place an order. A little retail therapy could be just what you need to lift your spirits.

Even if you can’t help local retailers financially, you can show your love for them on social media by sharing their posts, leaving positive reviews or participating in their live streams. Businesses will appreciate all kinds of encouragement and kind words as they fight to get through this time. Restaurant & Food Industry

As a subset of the retail industry, restaurants have also been heavily affected by the virus. Unlike other retail stores, restaurants are considered an essential business and have stayed open for at least carryout and delivery orders in most states. One of the best ways you can support your favorite local restaurants is to continue placing carryout orders and tipping generously when possible. Ordering delivery is a great option, too, but carryout orders will create the biggest direct impact for restaurants. Some stores have also started offering family-style meals, which are an option for larger families looking to feed everyone at a lower price.

If you’re looking for ways to support the restaurant industry beyond ordering food, consider purchasing stores’ merchandise, retail products or gift cards if they offer them. A t-shirt or cocktail sauce purchase is more beneficial to them now than ever. You may also give a donation to a relief fund for restaurant workers, or contact your favorite restaurants directly to ask how you can further support their business and workers. Tourism & Hospitality Industries

With travel bans and stay-at-home orders in place, hotels, museums and other hospitality businesses have faced sudden decreases in visitors. It may be unwise to travel now, but we will reach the end of social distancing eventually, and then we’ll all be ready to celebrate. If you have the means, consider booking a trip for later in the year or 2021 to give brands the boost they need now. When possible, try to book your accommodations with locally owned businesses that will appreciate the increased cash flow most.

If you don’t feel comfortable booking a vacation right now, use your ample free time to research an amazing future trip. You can look up the best hotels for your budget, must-see attractions and secret tips to get the most out of your stay. On the other side of the coronavirus spectrum, truckers and workers in the transportation industry have been working overtime to deliver supplies to grocery stores and supermarkets. Trucking companies are reporting higher volumes than ever, forcing more trucks on to the road for long stretches at a time. To help ease the heavy demands, consumers should limit purchases to goods they need more urgently and avoid completely depleting store shelves.

We can also support the transportation industry by being mindful on the road and giving trucks space on the highways.
