Public Relations is one of the most misunderstood professions in existence. With so many layers and aspects that are not apparent to the public eye, it can be easy to be misunderstood. If you are new to the PR industry, there are some key lessons to learn to allow yourself to be successful. Check out these four lessons for a PR newbie.
Learn to Say “Yes”
Regardless on the industry you are in it’s important to say yes to any requests. No matter the task, how small or large, be willing to try new things and participate in projects. When you start saying yes you open the door to new opportunities and chances in your career.
Always Ask Questions
When you first get started in the industry it is expected that you do not know everything. In fact, it’s anticipated for you to have questions or need clarifications. So when you need help understanding something—ask. I would be willing to bet that your supervisor would 100% rather you ask a question, or admit to being confused about a task before you begin a project, rather than doing it incorrectly.
PR is About People
There is a reason it’s called public relations. Working well with clients is vital in any career, but especially PR. If the clients you work with are uncomfortable when communicating with you about their needs and message, how can you successfully represent them and connect them with their public? To really get a strong message across for a client, do your research and understand their voice.
Stay Connected
This industry is all about making connections and maintaining relationships. Work on networking opportunities constantly to develop relationships with media contacts, clients, potential clients and colleagues. You’ll find that those you surround yourself with that can actually teach you more than you realize. Plus, you never know where a connection can lead you down the road.
